Bellarmine Celebrates 100 Years of Football

Posted: April 19, 2016

Nearly 300 people attended Bellarmine College Preparatory’s Breakfast with Bells the morning of April 16. The event, held in the Patrick Wayne Valley Memorial Gym on campus, was a fundraiser for the school’s Athletic Fields and Track Renovation Project, and celebrated 100 years of Bellarmine football.

Special guest, former San Francisco 49ers great Dwight Clark (who played high school football at Garinger High in Charlotte, North Carolina, but who agreed that, had he grown-up in San Jose, he would have been a Bell) joined a panel discussion with Bellarmine alumni Michael Clay, Class of 2009, who is now assistant special teams coach with the 49ers; and Pat McPherson, Class of 1987, tight ends coach with the Seattle Seahawks. Other notables in attendance were former 49ers players Dana Stubblefield and Randy Kirk; Rhett Hall, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles; former 49ers assistant coach Bill McPherson (Pat’s father); and Bellarmine alumnus California state senator Jim Beall. The oldest Bellarmine football alumni attending the event were Arnie Romanello and Don Bordenave, both members of the Class of 1948.

Among the highlights of the event were the showing of two student-produced videos celebrating the legacy of Bellarmine football, and the preview of a coaches’ tribute feature that will be permanently displayed when the football field is renovated, honoring five legendary Bellarmine varsity coaches: Dennis Heenan, Bill Prentice, John Hanna, Walt Arnold, and Mike Janda. Family members of all the coaches were on hand to enjoy the event.
