Over the weekend of September 24, Bellarmine College Preparatory’s resident robotics team, Team 254: The Cheesy Poofs, hosted the third annual Chezy Champs, an offseason FRC tournament to celebrate the recent challenge in the name of intense and enjoyable competition.

Of the forty-one teams participating in the competition this year, four proved victorious and went home with the coveted Chezy Champs trophies. After 69 matches of qualification and following an elimination style bracket, the winning alliance of Team 971: Spartan Robotics (Mountain View, CA), Team 1678: Citrus Circuits (David, CA), Team 604: Quixilver (San Jose - Leland High School), and Team 2135: Presentation Invasion (San Jose - Presentation High School), claimed the title in a narrow, final-match victory.

The Bellarmine Chezy Champs tournament has had a reputation the past three years as one of the most competitive events in California, with its champions having done well at the FRC World Championships which took place at St. Louis last April. Of the winners, the most notable was Team 971’s robot which was able to rapidly extend up from its starting position of just under two feet to a height of over four feet, allowing it to shoot boulders into a ten-foot tall goal. Team 1678’s robot, which employed vision tracking to sense the goal, showcased its programming skills as they shot from various angles across the field.

Team 254 from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, California, participates in the VEX Robotics Competition (VEX) as well as the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). As a two-time world champion (2011, 2014), the most decorated team in FIRST, and a member of both the VEX and FRC Hall of Fames, Team 254’s goal is to inspire other robotics teams and our community through STEM outreach in the spirit of FIRST’s Gracious Professionalism.
