Nineteen Bells were announced as semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship (NMS) Program. Less than one percent of US high school seniors are awarded this status, which is based upon the student's performance in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered into the competition, with approximately 16,000 achieving semifinalist status. National semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state, proportional to the state's percentage of graduating seniors as calculated against the national total.
To become a finalist, students must submit a detailed scholarship application, providing information regarding their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and honors/awards received. Finalists will be named in February 2018, with those students eligible to receive National Merit Scholarship monies.
