25th Annual Winter Warmth Drive a Success

The Bellarmine community collected loads of warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, and socks during its 25th Annual Winter Warmth Drive.

The drive resulted in donations of 700 blankets and throws, 75 sleeping bags, and $2,060 for the purchase of an additional 220 new blankets for HomeFirst’s Cold Weather Shelter program. Hundreds of jackets, coats, sweatshirts and other warm clothes; 2,081 pairs of new socks; and 100 hygiene kits were also collected for the many individuals and families served by Sacred Heart Community Service.

Several clubs, programs, and teams went above and beyond to support the drive. From the AGAPE Club's work on publicity to the Big Brother sock drive; from special collections by the football and cross country teams to the basketball free throw competition to raise money, our students were invested in the cause. Individual students also championed the program. Junior Aditya Behal led the efforts of the For Others Club to secure in-kind donations from various local merchants of personal hygiene items, including nail clippers, soap, shaving cream, and razors, which, along with personal contributions by students, resulted in the assembly of 100 personal care kits. Senior Seamus Shea—supported by classmates, teachers, and family—leveraged "Cyber Monday" discounts to purchase 60 sleeping bags that were donated to provide warmth to those in need.

Students' efforts, along with those of the community—including faculty and staff members, many of whom held homeroom and/or classroom drives; the Bellarmine Jesuit Community; the Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild and Dads’ Club; and the Christian Servce department—exemplified our motto of "being men and women for and with others."

    San Jose, CA Bellarmine College Preparatory will recognize four distinguished alumni at its Hall of Fame ceremony the evening of August 24, 2019.

    Those to be honored, and their respective categories, are: Kevin Frandsen, Class of 2000 (Athletics); Bill Del Biaggio, Jr., Class of 1958 (Business); Jim Harville, Class of 1963 (Humanities & Fine Arts); and Major General D. Scott McKean, Class of 1986 (Public Service).
