    Dear Parents,

Welcome back to another school year! I hope that you and your family enjoyed a wonderful summer, and that your son is ready for another school year. To those new to the Bellarmine community, let me once again extend a very warm welcome to you. Each month, I write to the parent community to try to share with you some of what has been happening at Bellarmine as we endeavor to fulfill our great responsibility and joy to educate your son in the Ignatian tradition.

    Dear Parents,

As you know, today marks the last day of classes for this academic year. While I know the boys’ thoughts are quickly turning to summer, I hope that they’ll be able to apply themselves for a few more days so that they will finish strong with their final exams!

    Dear Parents,

Welcome – or welcome back! I hope that you had a truly wonderful and memorable summer with your family and friends. It was great to see all of the students back at school this morning. While I’m sure there were some sleepy, pretty non-communicative boys when they left home, I saw plenty of smiles and heard lots of laughter as students greeted one another on campus.

    Dear Parents,

Today marked the beginning of our Justice Summit Week. As I stepped onto campus this morning, I was immediately grateful to my colleagues in the visual and performing arts department for the wonderful work that they have done in providing us with a striking visual reminder of our focus this week on Understanding Race in the 21st Century.

    Dear Parents,

As I know has been the case for many of you, I have been really upset by the news of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida earlier this week. I am incredibly sad for those whose lives were tragically cut short on Wednesday, and for the countless others who are grieving and traumatized by this event. Like many of you, I will admit that this tragedy also caused me to think about my own children and their safety – about my son here at Bellarmine, and about my daughter at her school. And of course it has caused me to reflect upon my professional responsibility as a high school administrator.

    Dear Parents,

As the most recent speaker for this year’s Summit on Human Dignity focusing on Understanding Race in the 21st Century, San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia, who is a Bellarmine parent, gave an address this morning to our students and staff, and then afterwards answered questions that students submitted in advance. After the assembly during lunch today, I met with students in the Arrupe Ambassadors – a service organization of upperclassmen that focuses on what it means to be a servant leader, in the model of Pedro Arrupe, S.J., and St. Ignatius. I asked the guys what leadership qualities had been demonstrated by Chief Garcia. Many hands shot up right away, as students noted that they observed qualities like humility, empathy, meeting with people from diverse backgrounds, inclusiveness, supporting his officers, and many others.

    Dear Parents,

For the past 15 years, I have been blessed to be part of a faith sharing group with colleagues here at Bellarmine. While three of us remain from the original group that started all those years ago, several others have retired, so we added a couple of new members this year, and went back to our original text: Challenge, written by Mark Link, S.J. Link’s intent in this daily meditation is to provide an opportunity for his readers to follow the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in small snippets. Each day, there is a very brief passage from scripture, a story, and then some questions for further thought and prayer.

    Dear Parents,

This summer, the Jesuit Schools Network (the body coordinating the work of all Jesuit schools in the United States and Canada) distributed a pamphlet entitled “Companions in a Mission of Reconciliation and Justice.” This document articulates that “Jesuit schools must provide a curriculum and a school environment that helps young women and young men focusing on these goals: 1. to form their consciences 2. to learn from the Jesus of the Gospels how to match their talents to the needs of their times 3. to balance social and political points of view in discourse steeped in Ignatian discernment that leads if not to agreement, then to mutual respect and a desire for reconciliation.”

    Dear Parents,

I hope that your son’s year at Bellarmine has gotten off to a good start, and that he’ll enjoy a little bit of a respite during this long weekend while the faculty and staff participate in an in-service on Monday. During this in-service, we’ll continue our own training relative to this year’s Summit on Human Dignity, with a particular emphasis being placed on using our 7 Principles of Constructive Dialogue.
